Scope An account owner sends the CorporateActionInstruction message to an account servicer to instruct election on a corporate action event. This message is used to provide the custodian with instructions on how the account owner wishes to proceed with a corporate action event. Instructions include investment decisions regarding the exercise of rights issues, the election of stock or cash when the option is available, and decisions on the conversion or tendering of securities. Usage The message may also be used to:

re-send a message previously sent (the sub-function of the message is Duplicate),
provide a third party with a copy of a message for information (the sub-function of the message is Copy),
re-send to a third party a copy of a message for information (the sub-function of the message is Copy Duplicate), using the relevant elements in the business application header (BAH).

Message Construction

ChangeInstructionIndicator building block

When used in a corporate action instruction, indicates that the current instruction is replacing a previous one that was cancelled earlier. When used in a corporate action instruction cancellation request, indicates that cancelled instruction will be replaced by a new corporate action instruction to be sent later. Indicates a “Yes” or “No” type of answer for an element. For comparison, see the ISO20022 official specification This message is declared as YesNoIndicator in the ISO specification. In our implementation, it is represented in source code as IsoYesNoIndicator. Due to global using directives, it is treated as a System.String by the compiler and runtime.

Extensibility and generalization considerations

To facilitate generalized design patterns in the system, the CorporateActionInstruction002V06 implementation follows a specific implementaiton pattern. First of all, CorporateActionInstruction002V06 impleemnts IOuterRecord indicating it is the outermost logical part of the message definition. Like all message wrappers, CorporateActionInstruction002V06Document implements IOuterDocument. Because CorporateActionInstruction002V06 implements IOuterDocument, it is a suitable template parameter for IOuterDocument, and causes the internal ‘Message’ to be of type CorporateActionInstruction002V06.

Document wrapper for serialization

The only real purpose CorporateActionInstruction002V06Document serves is to cause the document to be serialized into the ‘urn:iso:std:iso:20022:tech:xsd:seev.033.002.06’ namespace. Therefore, it will probably be the usual practice to build the message and construct this wrapper at the last minute using CorporateActionInstruction002V06.ToDocument() method. The returned CorporateActionInstruction002V06Document value will serialize correctly according to ISO 20022 standards.
